Writing about our Kiwi Kapers trip - by Marlene

It was the day where multiple schools went on a trip to visit the Aotea Centre to watch the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra Perform.

Facts about the five Composers

  • Johann Strauss the second was only 19years old when he first started his very own orchestra, and conducted his first public concert.

  • Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born in the same year as our Treaty of waitangi was signed, (1849).

  • Gioachino Rossini’s Parents were both musicians, his Father played the French horn and his Mother was a opera singer.

  • Edvard Grieg was one of the composer that liked to use Traditional Norwegian melodies in his music.

  • Jean Sidelius loved nature, Finnish folk music and last but not least he finnish mythology.

All these composers sheet music  has been played at the Aotea Centre by Auckland Philharmonia orchestra not only that they even played the 4 seasons which where.

  1.  A Composer writes  the sheet music.

  2. A Conductor tells musicians what to do.

  3. And of cause musicians play Instruments.

So here is how our day started in the morning at around 9am, our class Rm8 read a Pamphlet about what we where going to hear and see, the pamphlet was about different composers and music vocab, we where going thew the pamphlet skimming and scanning, and reading facts about the composers and also learning how to pronounce the composer's name. We did all that until 9:50am.

At 9:50am it was morning tea  we had our morning tea early because, the show starts at 11:30am, the adults that supervised us was Mr J, Kelly, Miss Langton and Miss Ashley, Our morning tea Started at 9:50am to 10:15am, so it was only 25mins long, after morning tea we had to go to the hall to be organised in our groups, and to have a little meeting before we had to go. Mrs Sharma was the first person to speak to us and told us to show our best behaviour, and to take our school values with us to where we were going, after Mrs Sharma speaked, Miss Ashley was the second and last person to speak at us before we lifted the school grounds. Miss Ashley only talked to us about 2 mins because she was only getting us in our groups, and knowing what Parent/Teacher we were with. The Parent I was with was Miss Ashley’s Mum she is a very kind woman, so our group was only girls in it and they were Junefia, Htoo say, Jordan, Abigail, Vaiola, Ana, Waiari, Nurul and Me.

So after we got into our groups we started walking to the bus they were 2 buses, one was for the 2 largest classes and the other bus was 3 classes in there, the one with the 2 class rooms were my class and Rm6 the other classes were Talamouka a tonga,Rm9 and Te Puna A Wairua. When we got on the bus we just waited for only 5 mins because we were waiting for Miss Ashley to sort out the other bus, when She finished we finally got on the road. So the first direction was coming out of Alamein road and towards dunkirk road from there on we just relax and played hand games, talking to each other. And then we made up this game called waving, so what we had to do was on each side of the bus we had to wive to people and see if they wive back and by the end we have to count how many wives did we get, so on one side was the girls and the other sides was the boys and during the game us girls knew that the boys are cheating so then we stop, but then me and my friend Nurul came up with a plan to make everyone use there voices and be happy a little bit because it was kind of quite so me and my  friend didn't have the guts to lead a song so we asked the boys but then they were even shyer then us so I had to lead it to face my fears of being so shy to lead something in front of how many kids that were in that bus, when we finished the song I felt so proud of myself for facing my fears.

When we Arrived we had to walk down a street not that far but it was only like a 1 min walk down, we also had to cross the street at the crossing lights but we didn't go alone we went and stayed with our Parent/Teacher, well we were crossing we saw lots of other schools and also lots of buses, the buses all most took up the whole road but the cars still made it through After we crossed the road, we carried on walking towards the Aotea Centre as we were almost there we saw some more schools coming from different directions, when we got even closer to the entrance we had to get everyone in line because they were like running around.

But when we finally got in me and my friend Nurul our jaws just dropped because everything was so fancy and so big,  but me and her tried to be at our best behaviour so we followed of Parent but what our Parent said before we go in is that if she is gone and we don’t know where she is then clap 5 times and she will hear us or if we are lost then she will clap 5 times as well to find us. So our school was on the front left hand side for where we were seating, when we sat down we looked everywhere and we saw like levels of seats on top, it was so cool and awesome because we saw a overhead Projector and it as a bit of English on it a also a bit of Te Reo . And then our Teachers and Parents started to take photos but then not so long the lights dimmed and everyone was screaming because it was so dark that what we only saw was the stage and they were little bumps on the wall like acoustics sound waves.

The First thing that happened was an overture and that’s when we knew that it has started, (an overture is when all the musicians take their places and wait until the crowd has settled down).  after that the conductor came and introduce himself he stands in a little platform which is called a rostrum it is based in the centre of the stage. After the conductor introduced himself a superhero guy came flying in while not really flying but he came to tell us what kind is a waltz, Waltz is a type of dance and it’s kind of related to folk dance. Johann Strauss the second had composed over 500 Waltz and not only waltz he composed, he composed Polkas,Quadrilles and other types of dance music, as well as several operettas and a ballet. Well that was the first music that they have played for us today, well we where waiting for the next song to play some of us felt cold on our feet because of the Air Conditioner but then some of them didn't even pay attention to the cold because of how beautiful the music sounds but any who lets carry on, after we give them a big standing ovation, Rossini the conductor told us about Tchaikovsky, and the instrument he used to play his music that he created in the 1800s
