Pirates - by Eh Htoo Wah

                                                              Pirates

‘’Pirates’’ when people hear this word most think of a person with a wooden leg and wooden teeth and they behave like animals. Well that is not entirely true, most were just poor people that may have lost their jobs or had their belongings stolen from them. They had to find a job to make money so they could eat and feed their family and some choose to be pirates. Although some were very cruel and only cared about money and would do anything to get it and some just wanted the money. At the end of a raid they would get a share of the loot they stole but the rules are that the captain got more than the crew and the cook and cleaners get less than the crew. Cooks were mainly just crew members who lost an arm or a leg in battle.

In battle they must be scary and loud because they want the people to surrender so they can have a quick raid. But raids don’t always go smoothly because some of the people will fight back and in the end some of the pirates will die. There are two flags that the pirates had: the red one means that they will show no mercy and will kill anyone but the black means that if you surrender then that will not hurt you but steal your loot.

Life as a pirate is not easy. Sometimes they will get lost at sea and just have to sail blindly and also control the food stock so they don’t die of hunger or dehydration. The problem when they are short of food is that they hardly ever fish. They think it is a waste of their time and even if they caught some fish it may not be worth it.

Scurvy was big then with pirates because they could not eat a lot of fruits and veggies and so they lacked vitamin C and this would cause a slow death. Also the Spanish, British and English started hunting down Pirates with steam powered ships and so they could not escape because they used sailboats. That was the end of the golden age of pirates.

Today's pirates are more dangerous with guns and with motor boats. Also they do not steal

From ships and boats instead they kidnap people and demand a high amount of money to set the people free.

Kiwi Kapers trip recount by Htoo Say Wah

Auckland Philharmonia  Orchestra - Kiwi Kapers

Today 6 classes from our School (Tamaki Primary) went on a trip (finally), we were going to APO (Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra).

Before we went to the bus our class Room 8 read a pamphlet about what we were going to see, and we basically did some work about that like the vocabs and what the mean and something new we learnt about in the Pamphlet. We also had our quick morning tea for about 20 minutes.

We were then ready so we went to the hall and got into our groups and got on to the bus, half an hour passed and we were at our destination we trudged to the place called Aotea centre where the performance was going to start at it was quite an immense place, as we were walking through the area some ushers appeared and ushered us to our seats.

As we sat down we waited a few minutes until all the musicians sat down at their seats and the light started to fade away. The show began with some music by the composer named Rossini. I was gonna fall asleep but the song made me think that I was in the farm chasing my escaping animals!.

The first songs that were played were from a composer named Gioachino Rossini, He was one of the most famous composers.

They played a few more songs, it played nicely and there were even actors and actors acting on stage. It was fabulous, and it took pretty much an hour but I loved it. It was amazing.

Conclusion

This was the first time going to the orchestra and my experience was great. I loved the orchestra and I would love to go again. The story and history of music is definitely one of the best.

Writing about our Kiwi Kapers trip - by Marlene

It was the day where multiple schools went on a trip to visit the Aotea Centre to watch the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra Perform.

Facts about the five Composers

  • Johann Strauss the second was only 19years old when he first started his very own orchestra, and conducted his first public concert.

  • Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born in the same year as our Treaty of waitangi was signed, (1849).

  • Gioachino Rossini’s Parents were both musicians, his Father played the French horn and his Mother was a opera singer.

  • Edvard Grieg was one of the composer that liked to use Traditional Norwegian melodies in his music.

  • Jean Sidelius loved nature, Finnish folk music and last but not least he finnish mythology.

All these composers sheet music  has been played at the Aotea Centre by Auckland Philharmonia orchestra not only that they even played the 4 seasons which where.

  1.  A Composer writes  the sheet music.

  2. A Conductor tells musicians what to do.

  3. And of cause musicians play Instruments.

So here is how our day started in the morning at around 9am, our class Rm8 read a Pamphlet about what we where going to hear and see, the pamphlet was about different composers and music vocab, we where going thew the pamphlet skimming and scanning, and reading facts about the composers and also learning how to pronounce the composer's name. We did all that until 9:50am.

At 9:50am it was morning tea  we had our morning tea early because, the show starts at 11:30am, the adults that supervised us was Mr J, Kelly, Miss Langton and Miss Ashley, Our morning tea Started at 9:50am to 10:15am, so it was only 25mins long, after morning tea we had to go to the hall to be organised in our groups, and to have a little meeting before we had to go. Mrs Sharma was the first person to speak to us and told us to show our best behaviour, and to take our school values with us to where we were going, after Mrs Sharma speaked, Miss Ashley was the second and last person to speak at us before we lifted the school grounds. Miss Ashley only talked to us about 2 mins because she was only getting us in our groups, and knowing what Parent/Teacher we were with. The Parent I was with was Miss Ashley’s Mum she is a very kind woman, so our group was only girls in it and they were Junefia, Htoo say, Jordan, Abigail, Vaiola, Ana, Waiari, Nurul and Me.

So after we got into our groups we started walking to the bus they were 2 buses, one was for the 2 largest classes and the other bus was 3 classes in there, the one with the 2 class rooms were my class and Rm6 the other classes were Talamouka a tonga,Rm9 and Te Puna A Wairua. When we got on the bus we just waited for only 5 mins because we were waiting for Miss Ashley to sort out the other bus, when She finished we finally got on the road. So the first direction was coming out of Alamein road and towards dunkirk road from there on we just relax and played hand games, talking to each other. And then we made up this game called waving, so what we had to do was on each side of the bus we had to wive to people and see if they wive back and by the end we have to count how many wives did we get, so on one side was the girls and the other sides was the boys and during the game us girls knew that the boys are cheating so then we stop, but then me and my friend Nurul came up with a plan to make everyone use there voices and be happy a little bit because it was kind of quite so me and my  friend didn't have the guts to lead a song so we asked the boys but then they were even shyer then us so I had to lead it to face my fears of being so shy to lead something in front of how many kids that were in that bus, when we finished the song I felt so proud of myself for facing my fears.

When we Arrived we had to walk down a street not that far but it was only like a 1 min walk down, we also had to cross the street at the crossing lights but we didn't go alone we went and stayed with our Parent/Teacher, well we were crossing we saw lots of other schools and also lots of buses, the buses all most took up the whole road but the cars still made it through After we crossed the road, we carried on walking towards the Aotea Centre as we were almost there we saw some more schools coming from different directions, when we got even closer to the entrance we had to get everyone in line because they were like running around.

But when we finally got in me and my friend Nurul our jaws just dropped because everything was so fancy and so big,  but me and her tried to be at our best behaviour so we followed of Parent but what our Parent said before we go in is that if she is gone and we don’t know where she is then clap 5 times and she will hear us or if we are lost then she will clap 5 times as well to find us. So our school was on the front left hand side for where we were seating, when we sat down we looked everywhere and we saw like levels of seats on top, it was so cool and awesome because we saw a overhead Projector and it as a bit of English on it a also a bit of Te Reo . And then our Teachers and Parents started to take photos but then not so long the lights dimmed and everyone was screaming because it was so dark that what we only saw was the stage and they were little bumps on the wall like acoustics sound waves.

The First thing that happened was an overture and that’s when we knew that it has started, (an overture is when all the musicians take their places and wait until the crowd has settled down).  after that the conductor came and introduce himself he stands in a little platform which is called a rostrum it is based in the centre of the stage. After the conductor introduced himself a superhero guy came flying in while not really flying but he came to tell us what kind is a waltz, Waltz is a type of dance and it’s kind of related to folk dance. Johann Strauss the second had composed over 500 Waltz and not only waltz he composed, he composed Polkas,Quadrilles and other types of dance music, as well as several operettas and a ballet. Well that was the first music that they have played for us today, well we where waiting for the next song to play some of us felt cold on our feet because of the Air Conditioner but then some of them didn't even pay attention to the cold because of how beautiful the music sounds but any who lets carry on, after we give them a big standing ovation, Rossini the conductor told us about Tchaikovsky, and the instrument he used to play his music that he created in the 1800s

PE rotation recount by Eh Htoo Wah

‘Silent’ said the teachers from the year 5 to year 8 all sat down on the court to get into our groups for PE rotation. First it was the other groups then my group. My friend keru was in the same group as me and the teacher was Mr Jay and then he told my group about a game from south africa.

‘So this is how you play’ said Mr Jay he told us that the game was nearly like cricket. There were two teams and the team that was trying to get points had to kick a ball and then run up and down to get points but if the other team caught the ball without the ball touching the ground or touched you if you were running you areT out. Then your other team mate turns after a while the other teams turn and at the end the team with the most points wins. When all the team was done we didn't really know who won but we only played it for fun a few min later the bell rang so it was time to go to a new game from Mr Roy.

‘Ok this game is from Philippine’ said Mr Roy. He said that you had to get your shoes and throw it at a bottle but there was someone blocking the group from hitting the bottle. You can only get your shoes when everyone is done throwing but if you touch your shoes and the defender touches you. Then you're out but if you hit the bottle then you can be the defender. I tried to knock the bottle over but is was impossible. I just could not get the bottles and the other people from our group got bored quickly. I couldn't blame them. It was quite boring but I kept playing to make Mr Roy happy before long the bell rang for school to end so I went up stairs, got my bag and went home.

The first game I played was fun, the second game was kind of boring and I hope the next time we all do the PE rotation it will be more fun and exciting.

Grade 2 Cycle training recount - by Michael L

On Thursday 20th of may 2021 room 8 had bikes “Hurry up lets go” said Miss Ashley. On thursday last block we did bikes. After lunch I straight away went to the bike people. Some of the  class were waiting for the other half to come. The other half came late either because they were still playing or having water at the water fountain. We probably learned how to put on our helmets.

We did a bike check, a for air, b for brakes, c for chain, d for direction, d for drop and q for quick brake/stop. Air is when you check if there's any air in the tyres. Brakes are when you ride your bike and brake. C is when you turn your bike upside down and then check if it's alright. The first d is when you direct the bike to where you want it to go. The 2 d is when you pick up your bike then drop it. Last on is q, q is when you ride down and if you nearly crash put your bum of the seat pull yourself back then push both of the brakes because if you do 1 then your gonna fly of.

Then we went home. On friday/pink shirt day room 8 came into class after hearing the bell go bang shivers boom. When we came to class we did the roll and did the lunch roll. After that we went marching downstairs then marched outside to the bike container. When we got back in the same group my team went out of school to learn how to do the hand sign. How do we do the hand sign?. So if you're on the road and want to turn left or right then 1. Look back 2. Put your hand out on the right or left for 3 seconds, 3. Take your hand down 4. Turn.

In the middle/last block we learned how to take a lane, stop, go, hand sign, turning right/left and giving way. When we learnt everything about bikes my group started riding from Dunkirk all the way to point england. When we went to Point England reserve and played tag and played on the swings, slide, climbing, fire fox thing and monkey bars. After we played for like 10 or 15minutes we all got a drink and then rode back. As we were riding back my friend chance taught me how to do the tricks on a bike like doing a wheelie and other tricks. Some tricks I knew how to do but the other tricks I didn't know how to do. I forgot to tell you I learnt how to ride a bike in a side seat. And  stop at a stop sign.

If was fun, I felt happy, surprised and shocked.
