5 minute summary OR explanation of what an algorithm and echo chamber are

Miss Ashley - This story is a fictional narrative depicting the various experiences of children during New Zealand's level 4 lockdown in 2020. Its main theme is about the algorithms that social media sites use to monitor what you are looking at, and show you more of what you like to see. This is called an echo-chamber. Being in an echo-chamber can be a good thing, if you are looking at innocent things like dog photos or cooking videos - there is no harm in only seeing the same thing over and over again. However when it comes to high-stakes topics, such as vaccinations and covid, being in an echo-chamber can be a bad thing because you are only seeing one side of the argument repeated over and over, and you don’t see any information from the other side, so you are not fully informed. Often people who are stuck in an echo-chamber hold extremist views, as they don’t receive a balanced amount of information from both sides of the argument.

Wesley- What is an algorithm? An algorithm is a code that serves your computer things related to what you have been recently watching. An algorithm will see what you have been watching and will send it straight to your fyp (for you page). It is like an echo chamber. What you say in an echo chamber will come back to you. What is an echo chamber you may ask? It is like a cave.-

Htoo - A algorithm is basically a computer that stalks everything you search up or watch, it watches what you do and gets more data of things you like for example if I searched up puppies it would tell me more about puppies that is a echo chamber

Nitika - Algorithm is a code that stalks everything that you search up or watch. Also algorithm are kind of like echo chamber……..

Abi- Algorithm is a process or set rules that need to be followed in calculations or other problem-solving operations, especially by a computer. In the most general sense, an algorithm is a series of steps instructions telling a computer how to do something, set of facts are data , and the useful information is knowledge for people , instructions for machines

Eh htoo echo chamber is when you watch a video then your device will recommend you more and let’s say that you watch the same topic then the device will recommend more and more.

Davlyn- echo chamber, what is an echo chamber? Well an echo chamber is a metaphoric cave, imagine yourself inside a cave and you shout out cooking or games it will come back to you. So imagine what you yell inside the cave is the things you type up or watch so if you watch cooking your recommended will be cooking or if you watch gaming your recommended will be full of gaming. Another word for the echo chamber is algorithm, algorithm is what people use in websites such as youtube, tik tok or instagram to search through your history and recommend what you have recently watched or searched up. For example if you watched or searched dogs your whole recommended page would be dogs. Sometimes being stuck in an echo chamber could be bad because while you're looking at dogs or learning how to cook you will be missing out on more important things like covid or shooting in your area but if you don’t really care about that stuff or don’t want to see that stuff like people getting sick and dying so the algorithm might be helpful.

Mariah - Lucy is a girl who pictured what would happen during lockdown. She would have a long sleep, have breakfast in bed with her P.J on and maybe have lunch in her P.J and have a movie night with pop-con and some Ice cream. But Lucy’s father had crazy ideas like breakfast will be at seven-thirty sharp and Lucy was fighting with her father but the father won and said the rules for what was going on but Lucy was  mad with her father but she just couldn't stay mad with her father. And her father said she had to

Railey - What is an algorithm? An algorithm identifies a rule or a code that is purposely created for devices and apps that teenagers use these days BUT… did you know that algorithms can stalk every single move you do. For example Youtube, Instagram, TikTok and many other apps the algorithm has seen everything you have watched or searched up for the past few days. This particular problem occurs on many different devices such as computers, desktop, phones, and even the device that you might be using right now.
