Kicking off our inquiry!

This morning we kicked off our new inquiry topic

LEISURE AND ENTERTAINMENT

First we read a text called 'Leisure and Entertainment in the 20th century.

This told us all about what life was like in the 1930's and some important things that happened.

A big change was in 1939, when a law was introduced in Britain that allowed workers one week paid holidays every year. Before this, people didn't take holidays as they couldn't afford it. This launched the new entertainment industry

We learnt about Billy Butlin, Oswald Stoll and Oscar Deutsch who helped build this industry in Britain. You can read more about them here.

Another change that happened in the 20th century was that people worked less and were paid more. In the 1900's, the average working week was 54 hours. By the 1980's, this was down to 39 hours. In New Zealand in modern times, 40 hours is considered the normal working week. We get four weeks of annual leave (paid holidays) as well. It is much better now!

Next, we researched when different entertainment technologies were invented.
For example, TV was invented in 1927, radio was invented in 1895, the internet only came in 1983 and the first commercial flight was in 1914.

We learnt lots of new words from our readings..
exotic, disposable income, century, salary, annual, silent films, Charlie Chaplin, BC (before Christ) and AD (anno Domini).

Next, we had a look at what entertainment was like in the early 1900's.

We watched a few clips like these..

The wizard of Oz was the first colour movie EVER - it came out in 1939.

Our class found Charlie Chaplin HILARIOUS! We learnt that movies didn't have the actors talking, (if they had any noise at all, it was music over the top) and were filmed in black and white.

The Royal Variety Performance was invented by Oswald Stoll. This theatre is still going today.

We also talked about the Roaring 20's, and how people were more rich after WW1. They had big parties and dressed very differently than we do now. We looked at clips from The Great Gatsby to help us understand.

  2. I learned that the people the people partied so much that they called the 20s the roaring 20s because people were so happy that the war was finally
finished. The other thing i learned was that when they make a movie like charlie chaplin they didn't have enough money to get the audio right so they had to do it with no sound except the background music.Th next thing was that i learned all of the gods that the Romans believed in like:Jupiter,Juno,Mars,Apollo and the lastly was Serapis.

  5. I learnt that in the 1930's people in England people worked less so they could have more free time. Billy Butlin, Oswald stoll, and Oscar Deutsch were three businessmen that built theaters and holiday camps for families. I also learnt that in 1939 there was a law that said every one that worked gets to have a one week paid holiday. At first I was confused on what a Paid holiday was but then Miss Ashley told us that it's when you get to have one week of but still get paid. One other thing that I learnt was the definition of Exotic. Exotic is something that doesn't belong somewhere but the people who live in that place know about it. For example a Kangaroo is an exotic animal to us because it does not come from our country or belong in our country. The opposite of Exotic is native. Our NZ native animal is a kiwi. I enjoyed reading this story and really found it interesting to see how they got entertained in England

  6. I learnt that people also had more free time because in 1939 a law was passed that every working person in the country was allowed one week's paid holiday per year. Many people had not taken holidays before because they could not afford to.People had started to work less as well, because their pay was able to stretch further and more easily.People had fun in the 20th century by going on cinema trips, enjoying radio and television, going fairgrounds and sporting events and dance clubs.People could travel further, cheaply and safely, which meant that eating out at exotic restaurants became popular too.Billy Butlin, Oswald Stoll and Oscar Deutsch were three of the people of the businessmen wanting to provide some of this fun so Billy Butlin set up holiday camps for British families.

  12. Wow look at how much work we did I really enjoyed this lesson I also have learnt a lot of things during this lesson like Rome first started 753 BC and ended at 27 BC(BC-Before Christ).
Also did you know that in the 20th century three businessmen Billy Butlin, Oswald Stoll and Oscar Deutsh were the three businessmen who brought fun to the British people. Billy Butlin was famous for setting up holiday camps for the British families, at Ingoldmells was were his first camp was.
Oswald Stoll was famous for bringing theatre entertainment and film studios to the British people.
Oscar Duetsch was famous for the Odeon cinema group. These cinemas brought British films and Hollywood movies to ordinary people in 258 places across the country.

  19. I learnt that in 20th century Three business mens wanted to bring fun to the british people and their names was Billy Butlin, Oswald Stoll and Oscar Deutsch. Theses threes had jobs for the british people. Billy butlin setted holidays camps. Oswald stoll was famous for creating theatre and film studios. Oscar Deutsch was the creator of the odeon cinema group. People still had more time for them self because there was a law that was passed in 1939 that people that are working can have one week's paid holiday per year. Also in britain the average working week was 54 hours. By then it has changed during the 1980s they changed it to 39 hours. Also at british they have exotic restaurants. Exotic means that it's from that place it's from somewhere else like for example if you eat macdonald it is exotic because it is not from NZ it is actually from America. I have really learnt a lot of the entertainment at britain.
