Hauora during lockdown

One of our tasks this week was to show how we are looking after our Hauora (well-being) through this lockdown/isolation time.

Here is Miss Ashley's.

Narrative - Giving each other feedback and feedforward

This week we each wrote a narrative, with the prompt of a stranded island.

Here is our planning template.

After completeing our writing, we each blogged it and then had to go and read each othres and give them feedback and feedback (one thing they did well, and one thing to work on next time/to improve on).

First we read Miss Ashley's narrative.

Then we gave her feedback based on the table of ideas we came up with ages ago in class.

Then we went to read each others, and everybody gave everybody feedback via the comments section of blogger or by comments in Google Docs.

Friday Reading - Pandemic Page 29

Today we read the last page of our article about teh 1918 pandemic.

New words and their meanings
Devastated - shocked
Definite possibility - Might/probably
Contribute - Helping
Industrial farming -  using machines to help with farming

Then we wrote in our words about the information

Wesley- There was a flu that killed 9,000 New Zealanders. Since 1918 there were three more flu’s in New Zealand pandemics in 1957-1968-2009. Then in 2019 there was the forth pandemic called  Covid-19 which is a Type A virus. .In 2020 we have better living conditions, better ways to communicate (internet, TV, phones) and better hygiene (showering etc) than the people did in 1918 so we are less likely to get a virus like the flu. However, we are increasing our chances of getting a virus because of industrial farming, and international travel.

Michael-By the end of december 1918 a flu killed 9,000 people, and heaps of people died in the war. In NZ the death toll in a few months was a  thousand in the war that took 4 years. There were 3 different pandemics in 1957,1968,2009 and 2019, in New zealand. The virus in 2019 was called covid19 a short word for coronavirus. Covid 19 got nz to alert 4. In nz there were 16 deaths, 1,065 recovered and 1,112 confirmed. But these days we have to stay ½ meters away from people, but we can stay home and have a chitty chat with your friends at your home. In 2020 we have better living conditions, better ways to communicate (internet, TV, phones) and better hygiene (showering etc) than the people did in 1918 so we are less likely to get a virus like the flu. However, we are increasing our chances of getting a virus because of industrial farming, and international travel.

Mariah.l - There was a flu that killed 9,000 new zealanders. 19,000 New Zealanders also died in the war during 1914-1918.
There were 3 more serious flu’s in New Zealand, in 1957-1968 and 2009. Now we have another one in 2019/2020 called (Covid-19) or Coronavirus.16 people died because of (Covid-19).In 2020 we have better living conditions, better ways to communicate (internet, TV, phones) and better hygiene (showering etc) than the people did in 1918 so we are less likely to get a virus like the flu. However, we are increasing our chances of getting a virus because of industrial farming, and international travel.

Eh Htoo- there was a flu that killed a lot of people and there were already a lot of deaths in the war. In New Zealand the death toll in a few months was 9 thousand and in the war that took 4 years were 18  thousand.  There were 3 other one in 1957, 1968, 2009 in 2020 we have better living conditions, better ways to communicate (internet, TV, phones) and better hygiene (showering etc) than the people did in

1918 so we are less likely to get a virus like the flu. However, we are increasing our chances of getting a virus because of industrial farming, and international travel.
. And in 2019 there was another pandemic for the virus COVID-19 (which is also a Type A virus).     In 2020 we have better living conditions, better ways to communicate (internet, TV, phones) and better hygiene (showering etc) than the people did in 1918 so we are less likely to get a virus like the flu. However, we are increasing our chances of getting a virus because of industrial farming, and international travel.

Davlyn- By the end of 1918 there was a flu that killed heaps of people plus deaths of the war. A few months later nearly 9,000 people died there were three other influenza pandemics, in 1957,1968, 2009 and 2019. The flu in 1918 is a virus that is around the world, the virus is called covid 19 the 19 comes from 2019. But these days in 2020 we have ways to communicate and we have better medicine. In 2020 we have better living conditions, better ways to communicate (internet, TV, phones) and better hygiene (showering etc) than the people did in 1918 so we are less likely to get a virus like the flu. However, we are increasing our chances of getting a virus because of industrial farming, and international travel.

Railey- By the end of December 1918, the world's problem was finally over, but sadly there were about 9 thousand and about 18 thousand people in the world and also in the war. But!There were also 3 other influenza pandemics, they started in 1957, 1968 and 2009.and also another virus. But luckily In 2020 we now have better living conditions.  compared 100 years ago. And also another devastating thing that has happened during 2019, there is a virus called Covid-19(type A) and has been spreading all around the world. In 2020 we have better living conditions, better ways to communicate (internet, TV, phones) and better hygiene (showering etc) than the people did in 1918 so we are less likely to get a virus like the flu. However, we are increasing our chances of getting a virus because of industrial farming, and international travel.

HOPE - By the end of December in 1918 the pandemic was over. But there were a lot of deaths. In a few months the death toll was nine thousand, for New Zealand there were about eighteen thousand people that died during the war. There were also three other influenza pandemics and they are 1957, 1968 and 2009.  There was a definite possibility for the outbreak on the scale of the 1918 pandemic. There is also another pandemic called covid - 19 that started in 2019 (It is a novel coronaviru (type A), which is why it's called COVID-19). The Covid - 19 started in china then it started to spread all over the world, In NZ we have 1,112 confirmed, 1,065 and 16 deaths but all worldwide there is 2,682,225 confirmed, 732,647 and 187,330. In 2020 we have better living conditions and better ways to communicate (internet, TV, phones) and better hygiene (showering etc) than the people did in 1918 so we are less likely to get a virus like the flu. However, we are increasing our chances of getting a virus because of industrial farming, and international travel.

Lily U -  In 2020 we have better living conditions, better ways to communicate (internet, TV, phones) and better hygiene (showering etc) than the people did in 1918 so we are less likely to get a virus like the flu. However, we are increasing our chances of getting a virus because of industrial farming, and international travel.

Senitila- In the last month of the year in the 1918 the pandemic was finally over. But there were many deaths. A few months later the death toll has moved to nine thousands, In New Zealand there is

Next we did a timeline activity

It looked like this...

When put in order, it looks like this...

Then we had some comprehension Q+A to do.

Here are Wesley and Davlyn's answers.
NZ’s killed by the Flu:_9,000___ Over a ____4___ year period.
NZ’s killed in WW1: __18,000____ Over a ____4 year___ period.

Why is the 1918 flu known as Spanish Flu?Because it was first in Spanish.

Why did some people think the 1918 flu was a return of the plague?Same effects

What medical knowledge was learnt from the 1918 flu? How important self isolation is

For every 1 European that died of the flu in NZ,5Maori died. This was because the europeans had better immune systems

Is it true that RMS Niagara brought the flu to NZ? no How do you know? Because there were already cases
.
Why was this virus so deadly? Because they all were so close and they were in unsanitary condition

If you caught this virus, what happened to you? You will get pneumonia and cyanosis

Who were the heroes during this crisis?  The boy scouts and people who volunteered

What limitations did people living in 1918 have during this crisis? (hint: think about what would have made it hard for them to survive this time, things they didn’t have then that we have now). Better medicine

Why is November 1918 known as ‘black November’ in NZ? The most people died in november from the plague

Name 3 things that increase the likelihood of a pandemic happening and explain why they do so:
don’t Stay home so you do catch it
Do not shower so you get germs.
 Do not wash your hands
Name 3 things that decrease the likelihood of a pandemic happening and explain why they do so:
Better houses because they are warm.
Better hygiene because they don’t get affected.
Technology/better knowledge because we know more about the body.

Explain what a vaccine is and how it works.

Explain what is happening in these pictures - write in your own words.
At the time 1918 there was a deadly flu then people made an unproven spray that would make you not get the flu. Then they started getting more people to get sprayed then a whole lot of people were lining up for the spray but they got the flu for staying next to each other. Then random people and kids went overseas to help the people at the war. Like kids delivering food and adults making coffins.

Wednesday Reading - Page 28

Link to text: http://instructionalseries.tki.org.nz/content/download/41195/459530/file/SJL4_2018-Pandemic.pdf

New words from this page and their meaning!

Vaccine- are a little bit of the virus that is dead so your body can make antibodies that can fight off the virus.
Zinc Sulphate- a medicine
Formally improved -Approved from the Government
Medical Benefit- Helping your body fight.
Undoubtedly- probably, definitely
Spray inhalers - a gas you breathe in through your nose/mouth, think of an asthma inhaler.

benefit/beneficial - mean the same thing

Next each student wrote the information re read in their own words.

Mariah - In 1918 there wasn’t any type of vaccines. In these days they would get a spray (Zinc Sulphate gas) and think it would do anything but it did nothing but they would breathe on each one and would still have the flu. They got more of the virus. So the spray did nothing at all.So once the war was finished they  they had a party and had the flu again.

Eh Htoo- in 1918 there wasn’t any flu vaccine they didn't know how to make vaccines or even know. What they are and the curse of the flu was unknown. Soon people got scared so they thought that breathing in a type of chemical called zinc sulphate gas. If they wanted to breathe the zinc they had to go to a public place in small rooms with lots of tubes. That made them even more sick. And the zinc gas didn’t even help with medical benefits. After the war people got together in parties to ask peace which got them even more sick.

Hope -   In those days they didn’t have any vaccine, Vaccine is something that makes antibodies and can fight off the virus/flu. Zinc sulphate gas is a medicine which they thought would get rid of the virus/flu. A few years later they found out that the spray inhalers didn’t do anything because they were all crowded together in the same room and that made it worse. Later on when the war finished everyone was excited and they were all together again and celebrating. That way the flu spread more and that caused more deaths.

Railey-During 1918 vaccine did not exist(vaccine- something that can fight off the virus). And had no clue how to stop the virus from spread. But  during that time they thought of something that could maybe fight it off, called the special bratio spray chamber(the special spray chamber is a pipe that can spray zinc sulphate gas to people) . But years later they knew that it didn't have any effect (didn't kill the germs or flu). During 1918 4 years later  people thought it was fine and so they had parties but later on the virus started to spread again.

Senitila- In the 1918  Vaccine did not exist. Vaccine helps your body fight the virus or flu off. People were offered one formally approved treatment: breathing in Zinc sulphate gas, which was thought to prevent the spread of the disease. When the war had finished everyone was happy and had parties and they got sick again and that's how the flu spread more around and it had caused more deaths.

Davlyn-in 1918 there were no vaccines because they did not know how to make them, vaccines are things that you put in your body to fight off all the viruses. In those days instead of  the vaccines they used zinc sulphate gas to fight off the, to use the zinc sulphate gas you had to go in one area with heaps of other people which is the opposite of the isolation. virus but these days we know that the zinc sulphate gas. But after the four years of war people wanted to celebrate, some people tried to ban street parties. In this celebration the death poll results went up.

Wesley - In 1918 vaccines were not there because people weren’t smart enough at the time. Vaccines are meant to help your body fight back any bacteria that would come to them. At the time they had something they could zinc sulphate gas they thought it would help fight back the viruses but it was not proven. They had to stand next to other different people so they would probably get sick.  After the war everybody partied then all of them got sick.

Michael-in 1918 there were no flu vaccines and no medicine that could treat complications from the flu. Breathing in zinc sulphate gas, which was thought to prevent the spread of the disease. The medical benefits didn't make everyone better, it made everyone sick because they were all in the same room helping others but when they are helping others they become sick because they were breathing on each other. After the war everybody was having parties, getting drunk. When they had parties they gave each other the flu/virus.

And lastly we worked collabotively on this Google Drawing, which analyses each of the different treatment methods they used.

Comment below if you have ever heard of any of these treatment methods before and in what context!

Tuesday Reading - Pandemic Page 27

Today we read page 27 of our text.

There wasn't many new words, but we learnt a couple..
Clergyman-Priest or a pa.
Mourners  -Crying for someone you lost.
buried /burial/bury - to put a dead person in the  ground
Constantly-every split second

Then every student wrote the information they read in their own words -

Wesley   - went overseas to help the soldiers inside France by giving them medical help.  But none of them were really trained to help so they just randomly got people .Only one quarter of them helped them to recover and a third were in New Zealand . The kids  peeled vegetables to make soup. The kids were also able to help deliver food. The adults would make coffins for the dead and also makeshift ambulances.

Mariah -  The medical was helping soldiers but some of the medical helpers were unqualified to do it.The little kids peeled vegetables to make soup and help to deliver.Volunteer adults made a coffin for the dead soldiers. And a quarter of doctors and medical staff helped the soldiers.

🅼🅸🅲🅷🅰🅴🅻- the medical was helping soldiers but some of the medicals/helpers were unqualified. Kids  peeled vegetables to help the troops, when they got hurt or when they were sick. And  The adults made coffins for the people that died. And people were able to help deliver food. At the end of the war there was a flu that hit New Zealand. Other people drove their cars as makeshift ambulances or built coffins for the dead. Lilla was the daughter of the clergyman in Christchurch.

Railey- by the end of the war, the flu started spreading around New Zealand,  And untrained volunteers and kids started to help. Kids such as boy scouts started and they started delivering food around the city  To help people that are in need. And many people such as doctors were helping soldiers to get cured.

Eh htoo-when the flu hit a third of the doctors and almost a quarter of the nurses in New Zealand were overseas helping in the war. So adults and kids did some of the jobs boy some built a coffin and made food they also cleaned the dishes boy scouts delivered food to house to house. lilla leach was the daughter of a Clergyman in Christchurch she did work to.

Then we worked on a Venn Diagram together comparing COVID-19, The 1918 Flu and the Plague.

Monday maths - WALT find fractions

Today we had 3 activities to do

The first one was to Screencast our warm up and answer them as quickly as we could.
Here is Davlyn's video.

And Mariah's.

Next Miss Ashley showed us how to solve problems like finding 3/4 of 16.
Here is Isi's completed work.

Our last extra challenge was to complete this slideshow, where we had to find fractions of the same number but in different place value positions. The purpose of this was to show us that we can find fractions of hundreds/thousands and decimals, (don't need to freak out!), we just need to start from the ones or tens and work upwards/downwards in place value positions.

Here is Isi's completed work.

Monday Reading - Pandemic page 26

First we revised the words we learnt last week by matching/grouping them together with similar words.

(Completed by Mariah).

We read it through, and any words we don't know, we define them and make a list of them. Then we write this information in our own words.

Strain    -Type of something
Claiming  -Real sickness
Severe  -Undesirable
Haemorrhage - when you bleed inside
Pneumonia  -You're Filled with fluid
Cyanosis  -Skin changes colour.
Fluid - kinda like a water flowing

This flu in 1918 was like the plague because they both go for your lung and then you get less oxygen so your skin changes. The strain was similar to the plague because it changes the skin when they die, the skin changes because the lungs gets flooded with liquid so it is difficult to breathe like the plague but it does not fill up with liquid.

The strain affected ages of 20 to 40 years old.
(By Isi)

Then we completed a visual dictionary..

Then we had to complete a visual dictionary, which when completed, looks like this....

(completed by Mariah).

Leave a comment below with the most interesting thing you learnt from this lesson!

Maybe about ring-around-a-rosy? Or plague doctors masks? Or 1500's toilet hygiene? Lol.

PB4L Lesson for lockdown!

Here is the list of ways to show school values that Room 8 came up with (via Google Hangouts!)
